TWENTY-NINE

Finn

“Finn.”

The familiar voice stopped me in my tracks. My heart sank. I wheeled around and pasted a thin smile on my face, shifting the duffel bag to my left hand. With my free arm, I reached out and hugged Olivia.

“Good morning, sweetheart.”

She clutched at my arm. “Do you know what’s going on? A soldier knocked on my door ten minutes ago and said Marcus and Rachel want to see me. Did something happen to Reno?”

Shit. She had no idea that Reno was in Boise with Georgia and Jonesy. Sympathy twisted my stomach into knots. “You need to talk to Havoc.”

“You know something,” she cried. Her fingers dug into my arm. “Please, if you know what’s going on, tell me.”

Olivia had caught up with me on the edge of the city hall’s parking lot. Turning my head, I spied a white van idling near the entrance to the building. The reinforcements Havoc was sending to Valhalla were ready and waiting for me. I was beyond eager to get on the road. Still, Olivia’s distress tugged at my heart. Not so long ago, she lay at death’s door, and Reno had been half-mad with fear. Now it was her turn to tremble at the prospect of losing him. Life wasn’t fair, was it?

Something in my expression alarmed her, made her take a step back and her face turn pale. Her hand fluttered to her throat. “Finn?”

I dropped the duffel and hauled her into my arms. “Reno is alive. He and Georgia are on a top secret mission. Havoc and Rachel will tell you what they can.”

“A secret mission?” I saw the wheels turning behind her eyes. “Please tell me they’re not with Jonesy.”

Olivia was one hundred percent trustworthy and committed to Reno and the cause, but the details weren’t mine to share. I picked up my bag and slung an arm around her shoulders.

“I’ll walk you over to the building.” I nodded to the soldiers in the van and held up a finger, letting them know I’d be another minute.

Olivia signed in with the sentries then glanced at my bag. “Are you going someplace?”

“Valhalla.”

Understanding filled her eyes. Valhalla was at risk because Jonesy was free. She rose up on her toes and kissed my cheek. “You take care of yourself.”

“I’ll see you soon, sweetheart.”

Olivia drew in a deep breath, clearly preparing herself for her meeting with Havoc. “Bye.” She waved and walked into the building.

I jogged over to the waiting van, climbed into the driver’s seat, and twisted around. One by one I met the eyes of the eight soldiers seated behind me, six men and two women. “I appreciate what you’re doing, that you’re willing to defend my family’s ranch.”

A young man with a buzz cut—Wade, if I remembered correctly—spoke up. “I’m from Baker City. I’ve seen Allsop’s people in action. I’ll make a stand against them any time, any place.”

The others nodded their agreement.

“I’m grateful that you’re willing to make a stand for Valhalla,” I said.

Wade pulled a CD out of a pocket.
